Corset
–noun
1. Sometimes, corsets. a close-fitting undergarment, stiffenedwith whalebone or similar material and often capable ofbeing tightened by lacing, enclosing the trunk: worn, esp. bywomen, to shape and support the body; stays.
Origin:
1225–75; ME < AF, OF, equiv. to cors bodice, body + -et-et
The word corset is derived from the Old French word cors, the diminutive of body, which itself derives from corpus - Latin for body. The craft of corset construction is known as corsetry, as is the general wearing of them. Someone who makes corsets is a corsetier or corsetière (French terms for a man and for a woman, respectively), or sometimes simply a corsetmaker. (The word corsetry is sometimes also used as a collective plural form of corset.)
The word corset came into general use in the English language in 1785.
Waist reduction
Main article: Tightlacing
By wearing a tightly-laced corset for extended periods, known as tightlacing, men and women can learn to tolerate extreme waist constriction and eventually reduce their natural waist size.
How to Choose & Fit a Corset
Sizing for corsets varies from maker to maker. Heavy Red corsets are sized according to waist size.
Step 1
Consider how often you will be wearing the corset. If you plan to wear one daily, avoid tight-laced items which constrict your waist (and breathing!) For occasional wear, a waist-cincher is ideal, such as an hourglass shape.
Step 2
Think about why you will be wearing your corset. Is it for reshaping of the body or more for costuming? This will determine the type of fit you want.
Step 3
Chosen well, a corset can enhance any bust, no matter what your cup size. An over-bust corset provides supports the bust while providing support. It can create the illusion of an ample cleavage. However, for the woman with the fuller bust, this may be constricting. Larger- breasted women will feel more comfortable in a corset which is under-bust / waist cincher. It does not provide support for the breasts, but by smoothing down the ribcage, it can minimise the bustline.
Step 4
Height is always a consideration when purchasing an over-bust corset. If you are tall, you may need to order a 'long' version. Under-bust / Waist cincher corsets, however, fit all heights.
Step 5
Higher quality and more expensive corsets, are sized according to your natural waist size. Simply subtract 2-4 inches from your natural waist size for your corset size. So, if you have a 34" waist, you would require a 32-34" corset. The corsets have individual sizing charts on their product page to show you the exact measurement of the corset when it is completely closed.
